Four large-scale online EMDR sessions supported Kiwis affected by Cyclone Gabrielle from March to May 2023.
Cyclone Gabrielle was the costliest tropical cyclone on record in the Southern Hemisphere. It made landfall in Aotearoa in February 2023, and even while the storm was devastating the North Island, Trauma Aid was preparing for an EMDR response. Trauma Aid conducted four large-scale online EMDR sessions from March to May 2023, supporting Kiwis in need wherever they were located. With colleagues at Whakaora: The EMDR Recovery Group, these sessions were provided free of charge. During the course of these sessions, it became clear that a separate charitable organisation was needed to coordinate EMDR responses to large-scale events in the future. From there, the process began to build Trauma Aid Aotearoa into the organisation as it exists today.
